My husband and I can’t remember the first time we met. I do remember his older sister teaching me gymnastics when I was 6 or 7, but I’m pretty sure I knew Joshua before that. He simply has always been there.
We first held hands in Edinburgh Castle, Scotland on wonderful trip with my family. Ever since then, seeing castles or reading up on medieval history brings up all sorts of romantic memories to mind.
Joshua proposed after 6 months of courtship (yep, we did the whole courtship thing) and we got married 6 months later. We both knew we were meant for each other after the first week. To be fair, I knew I’d marry him years earlier, but it took him a bit to get the idea himself.
He got on one knee in the middle of a dance and I said yes by surprising him with our first kiss.
I let my hair grow out for my wedding and cut it on our honeymoon.
My husband’s huge smile in this picture always cracks me up. It was the night before our wedding and he was a happy fiance.
Nine months later we embarked on the most life-changing adventure of all. Parenthood!
His name means “Strong Man of God”. From the very beginning, he has had a strong will and die-hard personality. (Yes, those are cheerios in his mouth. Even THAT wouldn’t make him keep his mouth closed for family photos)
It has been a pleasure watching him grow and mature. Eventually, we know he will use that strong will of his for good.
Even though we had our hands full as new parents, Joshua still asked me to dance.
We saw good days (like when we were surprised to find we were expecting again) and we saw hard days (like when we lost our baby Aaron).
Matthias followed nearly a year afterward. His name means Gift of God, and he was a gift that was prayed for and received gratefully from the very beginning.
Matthias was born with a head full of bleach blonde hair. This was a surprise, since I had always matched the name Matthias to a dark-haired child. God has a sense of humor sometimes.
Matthias has basically been a mini Joshua clone, both in looks and personality. Just look at these comparison pictures. That’s Matthias on the left and my husband’s childhood picture on the right.
Maybe this next child will look like me.
It has been a wonderful 5 years. My husband has loved me, cherished me, protected me, and provided for me. I have done my best to honor him, follow him, and trust him with our future. If my sons turn out just like him, I will be very pleased.
We have honored God in our marriage and God has been SO faithful to bless us in return. Happy Anniversary, my love!
